The victim of a fatal house fire in Shubenacadie on Monday morning has been identified as a 45-year-old man.
“We are waiting on autopsy results and continuing our investigation,” said Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, spokeswoman for the RCMP.
Police and firefighters were called to the house on Monday at about 9:45 a.m., by a neighbour who noticed the fire. A civilian who was first on scene attempted to enter the home but was pushed back by flames and smoke, police said.
The house is located at 20 Heritage Lane, just north of the Shubenacadie exit from Highway 224 and about 400 metres south of the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.
Ownership information obtained from ViewPoint Reality Services Inc. of Bedford shows that the property is registered to Hank Kenneth Pilgrim and Stacy Jean Fritz-Pilgrim.
The RCMP said the victim is from Shubenacadie.
Colchester District RCMP remained on the scene with the Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal while the investigation continued. The Medical Examiner Service was to conduct an autopsy Tuesday.
Chief Kevin Jodrey of the Shubenacadie Volunteer Fire Department said Monday that smoke was showing in the eaves of the 1.5-storey house when his crew arrived on the scene. The fire was controlled and extinguished by early afternoon. Fire crews from 10 departments in East Hants, Colchester County and Halifax Regional Municipality were at the scene.
The cause of the fire has not been determined but Clarke said the RCMP, working with the fire marshal’s office and the medical examiner, have concluded that the fire was not suspicious in nature.
