"We found a home," board secretary Andrea Thompson said excitedly, of a building recently purchased at 862 Prince Street.

"It was within our budget," she said, of the $152,000 price tag.

The shelter currently operates out of a portion of the First United Church but, after receiving numerous extensions, the society has to vacate that facility by the end of August.

Plans to construct a new shelter on land donated by the Town of Truro did not come to fruition, in large part because of a lack of funding, and society members have been struggling to find a suitable building in a properly zoned area.

Once the deal closes at the end of June, however, renovations will begin immediately to get the building ready for occupancy as a homeless shelter.

As well as getting the building set up, there are a number of fundraising initiatives in the works, including a paint night and a softball tournament on July 22.

“It’s going to be a big, exciting summer,” Thompson said.

“We’re going to be fundraising our butts off,” Thompson said, with a capital campaign to be launched in the near future.

She also extended accolades to all current and former society members and others involved with helping them get to this point.

“It’s the effort that everybody has put in, in the past seven years, that has got us to where we are right now,” Thompson said.

Renovations to the new site will include constructing a commercial grade kitchen, separate shower facilities for men and women and a women’s dorm.
