After getting loose and being missing for more than a week, the Great Dane was reunited with her new owners on New Year’s Eve.
“I was just elated. It gave me a reason to celebrate the new year (because) I was really starting to think she wasn’t coming home,” Ashlee Walsh told the Truro Daily News on New Year’s morning.
Walsh said she spotted Ivy a few times on Wednesday in the McLean Street area, without any luck bringing her back to her William Street home.
“I could see her, but couldn’t get to her. It was a pretty defeated feeling,” she said.
A live, safe trap was placed on Ice Pond Road off East Prince Street and the Walshes surrendered the search once it became dark.
At 9 p.m. they finally received the news they have been waiting for more than a week to hear.
“The previous owner called … they said, ‘I have good news … Ivy’s been found and she’s safe and she’s warm.’”
Walsh said Ivy was near a wooded area and appeared not to far away from some children who were playing in the East Prince Street area.
“They coaxed her inside with cat food,” said Walsh, adding the people – Joey and Amy Jordan - called Ivy’s previous owners, who then shared the good news with the Walshes.
Walsh picked up her furry friend and immediately noticed a few changes.
“She’s so skinny; she’s looking more like a grey hound,” she said, adding Ivy’s paws also appear to be worn down a bit.
“But, she’s in good shape for being gone nine days,” said Walsh, fearing having the pet back was just a dream.
“I kept thinking it’s just a dream and I’ll wake up.”
Walsh sends many thanks to everyone in the community who helped search for Ivy. The Nova Scotia Lost Dog Network was also good for tips and assisting the family in getting a second trap, said Walsh.
There are a few things the family expects to happen now that Ivy is home.
“So many people want to come meet her” because the community support, said Walsh, was been overwhelming.
Also, the family will take Ivy to the vet for a check-up and expects to purchase a shock/sensor collar to help protect and keep Ivy on home property.
