BROOKFIELD - For the next 10 days, it's going to be all things Brookfield.

Coming Home to Brookfield kicks off today, and a variety of events during the next week will highlight the times - past and present.

Lynn Matheson, one of the organizers of the 17th annual event, said she's anxious to hear all the stories during Tuesday's ‘Our Seniors' Journeys.'

"Lyle Carter interviewed Cecil Stevens before, and that's how it got started," she said, adding Stevens will be one of nine seniors to tell their stories.

"Some of the seniors were born in Brookfield or brought up here. Some grew up in Brentwood, just outside Brookfield."

The seniors' event will have a number of other speakers, such as Stena Cook and Lawrence Wynn.

Helen Kendrick will also reminisce.

"She came to the area as a bride out of the Second World War, and she was also in the armed forces," Matheson said of Kendrick.

To kick off the homecoming event, the Light Up the Village Parade will begin at 9 p.m. at the fire hall, before a parade heads to Ed Creelman Park for music by The Altonators and refreshments.

Residents are encouraged to turn on their white lights at the same time to celebrate.

Saturday's events will feature a parade from the train station to the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex, beginning at 11 a.m.

A domino topple will start at 1 p.m. at the curling rink.

Local performers will showcase one-hit wonders from the 1950s to 1980s at 7 p.m. at South Colchester Academy, and Signal Hill of Halifax will perform from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. at the Sportsplex.

Highlights for Sunday include an amazing race for ages 13 and up and the third annual graveyard experience.

The Brookfield Baptist Church is celebrating its 150th anniversary Sunday night, with a 7 p.m. event featuring The Colbourne Connection in concert.

Throughout the week, visitors and residents can participate in activities such as boot camp, yoga, geocaching, a motocross open practice or hip-hop dancing.

There is also horse jumping and dog shows, coffee house, golf scramble, movie night and a guided walk through the quarry.

The whing ding will be held Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the parking lot at the Sportsplex. Both nights will feature entertainment, and Saturday will include fireworks.

A 5km fun run will be held Saturday morning, with waterslides in the afternoon and a homecoming sail boat regatta.

Things will wind down on Sunday with a pancake and sausage breakfast, community worship service, homecoming closing ceremony and sail boat regatta.
