Signs recently posted on a utility pole on Tidal Bore Road have been installed as a way to determine the depth of water during flooding conditions.
David Westlake, alternate emergency management co-ordinator with Colchester County’s regional Emergency Management Organization (EMO) requested the signs be put up following an incident Feb. 26 when the road to the tidal bore viewing area was cut off during flooding conditions.
“It came in as potentially, there were people trapped,” he said. “Fire departments are not going to drive through water if it’s excessively deep and we couldn’t tell the depth of the water.”
As it turned out, RCMP members assisted in getting the trapped individuals safely away from the area by taking them by foot over higher land to Hwy 102.
But given the area is a low spot in the flood zone, Westlake said the markers, which measure the distance from the ground at levels of .5 metre and one metre, could prove beneficial during future floods.
“It’s more of a precautionary thing,” he said. “But also to prevent others from driving through if the water’s too deep.”
