TRURO, N.S.
A court hearing to set trial dates for a youth charged with the murder of a Stewiacke man has been adjourned until July 3.
The teen, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act is charged with second-degree murder in the Aug. 18 death of Daniel Handrahan, 46. The death occurred following an early morning altercation outside a Stewiacke residence.
The youth, who was 17 when he was arrested, has elected to be tried by judge and jury in Nova Scotia Supreme Court. He is free on a bail recognizance with a number of conditions.
Trial dates were scheduled to be set on Tuesday. However, Crown attorney Rick Hartlen said his office is still waiting for the preliminary inquiry transcripts to be completed.
Hartlen estimated the trial would take between three and five days to complete, including the time required for jury selection and to file pre-trial motions.
