The Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre has announced scheduling for the upcoming camps, which begin July 4, in Tatamagouche.
The camps are designed for girls, age eight to 11, who want to participate in a summer camp in a gender-based learning environment. Science experiments, recreation and physical activity are offered, as well as crafts and games.
“Feedback from this popular camp has been extremely positive,” said Raechelle Lindsay, community development coordinator at the women’s centre, “and this year we have expanded the camp to four days per week. Parents were looking for more days per week, the girls wanted more days a week, so we decided to go for it. This gives the girls more time to bond, and ultimately more time to have fun.”
A main focus of the camp is to support girls, in being girls, according to Julie Crouse, executive director.
“It is hard being a girl in 2016, there are tremendous pressures and we try to tackle some of those issues throughout the four days,” she says. “From self-esteem and body image, to women in non-traditional roles, we work to try to build the girls’ protective factors to help them respond to those pressures in positive ways.”
There is limited space, so parents need to register early, Crouse advises.
Cost of the camp is $60, and limited subsidies are available. For more information or to register, contact the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre at 902-895-4295 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
