Friends Lynn Colpitts, Tom Bailey, Debbie Doucet and Sherry Bagnell Cumming got together last year to bring a band from New Brunswick – Borderline – to the area and decided to make it a fundraising dance.

“We thought we would raise money for something, otherwise it would just be a band coming to town,” said Doucet.

The group last year chose the Christmas Index to benefit, and close to 325 people helped raise more than $4,600 for the program.

“We thought we could feed people around Christmastime,” said Bagnell Cumming about why they chose that particular program.

“And we wanted people to be able to enjoy Christmas the way we do,” added Doucet.

This year, however, the group is hoping to raise $10,000 with all the proceeds going to the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society and the Colchester branch of the SPCA.

“The SPCA has always been on my bucket list,” said Colpitts, adding hospice has been on the list for both her and Bagnell Cumming as well. “But the SPCA for sure.”

“We just have to raise twice as much,” said Bagnell Cumming. “And I think we will.”

From 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Borderline will perform at the Best Western Plus Glengarry during the fundraiser, which will see “well over” $5,000 in prizes raffled off or given away.

“People last year told us afterward that they had a great time and if we were to do it again, to let them know. It was quite an exciting evening,” Bagnell Cumming said.

Charm Diamond Centre in the Truro Mall is the largest sponsor for the event, having donated a necklace that is worth more than $1,200 before taxes.

There is also an $1,100 travel voucher to be raffled off, with a portion of it being donated by Carlson Wagonlit-Harvey’s Travel. Many other local businesses and individuals have stepped up to the plate as well, donating numerous items for the evening.

“The businesses around Truro have been awesome,” said Colpitts, who noted KKP – a division of Kwik Kopy Printing – printed the tickets for the event.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at MacQuarries Pharmasave on the Esplanade, or by calling Lynn Colpitts at 902-893-5441 or Sherry Bagnell Cumming at 902-895-3531.

Tickets for the raffle will be sold at the event for $10 each or three for $20, and the tickets are eligible for all raffle prizes. The event is for ages 19 and over, and a cash bar will be available.

Anyone needing more information, or who may want to donate to the event, can call Colpitts or Bagnell Cumming at the numbers above. Tax receipts are available for donations.

“We’re encouraging everyone and their friends and family to come and enjoy a fun night,” said Doucet.
