The Truro Dance Academy is undergoing many changes. The dance company will now be named Cobequid Dance Academy Inc. and will relocate from the Nova Scotia Community College to 15 Arlington Place in downtown Truro.
Melissa Page-Webster, owner of Cobequid Dance Academy Inc., and former Truro Dance Academy student, said the dance studio’s significant growth necessitated the move.
“We’re growing. We’ve seen a steady increase in students, at least 10 per cent, every year for about five years,” said Page-Webster. “The move means our studio space easily tripled and it’s important to bring almost 300 families to downtown Truro.”
The new location is expected to open Sept. 20 for classes and will offer upwards of 75 classes a week for more than 400 students of all ages and abilities. Students will be busy working on a production of Nutcracker, to be performed in December, as well as a year-end recital for next June.
Programming will also be expanded to include Pilates and hip hop dance with a professional teacher. Classes for adults, seniors, as well as parents and tots will also be added to the schedule.
In addition, Margot Begin-Gillis, who began the dance company 17 years ago, will continue as artistic director.
Page-Webster said having a successful dance studio – many former students and graduates of Truro Dance Academy have pursued full-time careers in the performing arts – is vital to the community.
“The physical nature of dance is very demanding and challenging. It’s a great opportunity to (be) creative and it’s the oldest form of communication. Dance has been a part of communities since cavemen; it’s part of the heartbeat of the community,” said Page-Webster.
