Construction crews started clearing the land earlier this month for Stewiacke River Crossing’s first phase. Perry Lake Developments is constructing the subdivision behind businesses, such as Subway, and is also looking at building a business park just off the Veterans Memorial Highway.
“It is a relief,” Robinson said about seeing crews working on the project. “It’s been seven years in the making and during those seven years, there were a couple of false starts, so it’s great to see the company is in a position that they’re able to start it.
“They feel as if there is enough interest.”
According to the Stewiacke River Crossing website, the first phase will include 35 residential lots, with two pending, over a span of 25 acres. The remaining lots are still available.
In total, Stewiacke River Crossing is planned to consist of 120 acres, encompassing single and multi-residential units – 68 single family homes, 24 senior condominiums, four 36-unit buildings, 28 town houses and 20 single family villas, as well as commercial facilities.
Phase one is expected to be finished by July, according to the company’s site.
“They are planning on constructing two model homes and I would expect to see some buildings by the fall,” said Robinson.
As she watched crews clearing the land, the mayor said the town is expecting to see a total of 30 new residential starts this year alone.
“We are one of the few rural areas in the province that is growing,” she said. “So we’re expecting to grow by at least 30, but generally that would be 60.”
Along with the Stewiacke River Crossing construction, a quad and triplex have both been completed on Kel Ry Drive, just off Riverside Avenue. All seven units are already occupied. Construction is currently underway on another quad across the street, with the possibility of another being added.
Work is also continuing on the St. Andrews River Estates on St. Andrews Street, with development beginning soon off Sherbrooke Street.
