BROOKFIELD – Leah Roop believes getting involved in her community means contributing to its overall vitality.

With that in mind, the 26-year-old Brookfield resident is one of about 200 volunteers who have been working hard to present this year’s Coming Home to Brookfield. The annual week-long event kicks off Saturday with a parade at 11 a.m. at the community’s train station and boasts of at least 40 entries.

“That’s what we do … get involved. People do stuff to make it a better place to live and there’s lots of satisfaction seeing how many people come out. Being active and getting out is happening less and less in the world, but not the case here, thankfully,” said Roop, who will help with the mad hatters’ children’s events, among other things.

Event co-ordinator Judy Matheson said the theme of the 18th annual event is

You Are Among Friends. There will be about 40 events during the week, including new activities such as a remote plane demonstration, ATV rides, antique car show, and artisan show, to name a few.

Matheson said past years have attracted crowds of about 2,000 and she expects the same success this year.

“It’s engrained (in people’s minds) now. People expect it and see people they don’t see at other times. People are planning their vacations to be here,” said Matheson.

“Brookfield residents get involved and adopt the community as its own. That’s one of our strengths. In some small villages people grow up and move away but many are staying here. We have a continuity some don’t enjoy.”

Another aspect of the homecoming is that it’s open to everyone, including people outside of Brookfield, said Alexis Rains.

Rains, 15, is a South Colchester Academy student, going into Grade 11, who is a homecoming volunteer for the first time. She’s impressed youth are getting involved.

“It’s good to get youth volunteering because their opinions appeal to all ages too,” said Rains, adding her favourite homecoming activity is the whing ding, which includes games, dunk take, bingo and more.
