Classified, who was born as Luke Boyd, said it was a decade ago.
“I opened for Choclair at Chevy’s about 10 years ago and I haven’t been back since. I’m just really excited to be in Truro again,” said the hiphop artist who is kicking off the Town of Truro’s Canada Day celebrations with a performance on June 30 at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.
“I’m really looking forward to playing at the centre, I’ve heard a lot about it.”
During the Monday night performance, both David Myles and Classified’s younger brother, Mike Boyd, will be joining him on the stage.
“My brother has always performed with me. I’ve been bringing him on tour since about 2004 and when I had some downtime after the success from last year and decided to take a break from recording a new record, we started working on Mike’s,” said the artist.
Since then, Mike Boyd has been performing his own solo shows and released his album, …Note The Sarcasm, in March.
“We’ve really been pushing that, and he’s got a song going to radio next month,” Classified said.
But while the hiphop artist and producer is breaking from his own album, he’s still working in the studio with other musicians, such as Myles.
“He’s on his way over now,” he said about the roots artist who is featured in hit track ‘Inner Ninja.’ “He’s started a new album that I’m producing, so he’s here a couple times a week.”
Classified said Myles was a fan of hiphop, however Classified “wasn’t really” into the folk world that Myles was in.
But that soon changed after the two met and hit it off and have been recording ever since.
“Oh, he’ll definitely be on there,” he said about Myles featuring on his new album, which he expects to go into the studio for following the summer. “On my last few albums he’s had a hand with a song, so we’ll do that again … and I’m producing his new album too.”
With the success of Inner Ninja, Classified said he wasn’t initially sure how it would do.
“When Dave and I were in the studio, we knew it was cool, but it was a different track. I thought it would be my second or third single off it, but didn’t want to go with it right away because it is so different from my songs as well,” said Classified, adding it was record label Universal that made the decision to release it first.
“They knew it could be something really big. It’s pretty ridiculous how big it got. I wish Dave and I had videos from when we were recording it. We were in the studio for three days and it could go either way. One minute we hated it and the next we loved it.”
With Myles having been announced already for the June 30 show, Classified was hoping he would be able to surprise the crowd with his appearance.
“This is going to be like a hometown party for me, with a lot of friends coming out,” he said. “All we want to do is try to have a good show.”
He said both Myles and his brother will join him on the stage at some point throughout the evening.
