BROOKFIELD, N.S. - A structure fire broke out in Brookfield over the New Year’s weekend, leaving a building completely destroyed.

Brookfield Fire and Emergency Services arrived on scene to a structure fire along Highway 2 around 4:56 p.m. on Monday.

Emergency crews shut down a part of Hwy 2 between Highway 289 and Whidden Road while firefighters fought to control the blaze before being reopened at 10 p.m. that evening.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out around 9:30 p.m., but were on scene until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning monitoring and controlling hotspots in the building.

“Our difficulty was the building had a steel roof and steel siding,” said Rod Nielson, fire chief for the Brookfield Fire Department.

“The roof had come down on top of the structure, so to get around it and find the small stuff that was burning was difficult.”

While no one was hurt in the fire, the building, which housed a bridal shop and was once the Brookfield Fire Hall, was a total loss, said Nielson.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown but an investigation is underway.
