Gates to the Bible Hill Recreation Park will be locked at night, in an effort to prevent further vandalism.

There have been three instances of damage at the park so far this season.

In late June, obscenities were painted on the surface of the splash pad. Spray-on chalk was used, and maintenance staff members were able to remove it.

The second incident involved young people drinking and breaking beer bottles on the splash pad.

“They then appeared to try to clean up, and moved the glass off the splash pad, into the grass,” said Bible Hill Recreation Director Cody Brown. “That made it worse because it was harder to find and clean up.”

The third incident involved soap dispensers being stolen from washrooms.

Brown said this is the most trouble he’s seen at the park.

“We installed a camera system in March, and we have quite good video of the people,” he said. “We’ve identified some and dealt with the ones who’ve been identified. Police files have been opened for the others.

“This is a really nice community asset, and the idea that people introduce hidden dangers, like glass in grass, or paint obscenities is really disappointing.”

Gates to the park will be locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and a security company will be doing an increased number of sweeps through the night.

Anyone with information on damage to the park should contact Colchester RCMP or CrimeStoppers.
