TRURO, N.S. – A public meeting is planned for next Wednesday to discuss the location of a sidewalk on Carter Road in Brookfield.
Colchester County’s approved five-year capital budget includes the construction of a sidewalk from Highway 289 to the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex on Carter Road. The sidewalk is to measure about 270 metres and would cost approximately $250,000.
A staff report to council suggests the safest option for pedestrians would be to locate the sidewalk on the west side of Carter Road. However, area Councillor Geoff Stewart said residents he has spoken with are adamant the sidewalk should be placed on the east side of the road, because fewer residential lawn frontages and driveways would be impacted by the construction.
“We should be doing what the residents request,” Stewart told the Truro Daily News. “The residents will be paying for it.”
Wednesday’s open house is to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Brookfield fire hall.
The report to council said because the sidewalk will be constructed within a provincial right-of-way, staff has discussed the sidewalk location with Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. And while transportation officials indicated they would not dictate the location of the proposed sidewalk, the report said, it was noted that gaining approval for a future crosswalk in the vicinity of the Sportsplex would be unlikely, should the sidewalk be placed on the east side of Carter Road.
“I think we can deal with that when we get to it,” Stewart said, of the crosswalk issue. “And if we can prove it is a safety issue I think they would have to do it.”
A future extension to the project is intended to take the sidewalk up to the seniors’ residential complex beside the Sportsplex.
