TRURO – A one-year hiatus didn’t hurt Keith Gillis at all.

Gillis, the 2012 wild blueberry harvest festival pie-eating champion, polished off a good portion of pie on Friday to reclaim his title at the Marigold Cultural Centre.

Gillis, of G&G Computers, held off seven other hungry competitors, including 2013 champion Addie Maccallum of the Colchester RCMP.

Maccallum finished second, while Chris McPhee of major festival sponsor Leon’s Furniture was third.

Skylar Blackie of the Truro Fire Service was the messiest of all, as he attacked the tin plate with vigour, and sported a face full of berries when all was said and done.

Truro Daily News sports editor Ryan Cooke acquitted himself well in his first pie-eating contest, while Alyssa Roy of the Cat Country/Big Dog summer events cruiser, who had her own cheering section, did well from the end of the table on the Marigold stage.

Truro Police Service Const. Robert Hunka garnered the biggest applause during introductions, while celebrity Jillian MacLaughlin of Big Brother Canada was all smiles during the fun contest.

Friday was the official kick-off of the two-week festival in Truro and Colchester, and included music by J.P. Cormier.
