TRURO – The Truro-based Salvation Army has new officers.

Bhreagh and Daniel Rowe arrived in Truro last week and have very specific goals for their new home.

“We are not coming in assuming we know what the community needs, so we want to form partnerships and get involved in the community,” said Daniel, 24.

“We want help getting to know Truro and where we are lacking and what Truro needs that we can help with,” added Bhreagh, 25.

The husband and wife team were ordained in Winnipeg as Salvation Army officers on June 21. They replace Kim and Andrew Wilson, who were interim pastors since January in Truro. Before that, Stephen McNeilly oversaw the church since 2009 and recently was appointed to a Salvation Army in Quebec. The Rowes said it is common practice for officers to be rotated within Salvation Army churches on a regular basis.

Although the Rowes are new to the area, they already have a busy agenda between networking in the community, learning more about what is needed locally and getting an early start on major fundraisers.

“We’d love to see the church family grow,” said Bhreagh, of The Salvation Army, which typically has a congregation of about 50 in Truro. “But we also want to get out in the community and start new programs ... and we are up for suggestions from the community.”

They are also encouraging residents to become volunteers with The Salvation Army and consider signing up now to assist with the Christmas kettle campaign and hamper distribution during the winter holidays.

“We always need volunteers and we are starting to (organize) those programs now … because the need is so great,” Daniel said.
