TRURO - The 28th annual Blessing of the Bikes is expected to attract thousands of people to Victoria Park Saturday.

Last year’s event, which was hosted by the Organization of Responsible Bikers, attracted more than 2,500 participants from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The event blesses motorcyclists as they begin another year of cycling and officially marks the beginning of the motorcycle season.

The event begins at 9 a.m. in the park, rain or shine, and offers bikers and the public a chance to meet, look at the various motorcycles on display, enjoy leather goods, partake in a barbecue and 50/50 draw, and have the official blessing and a parade throughout the downtown.

Alan Shaw, a member of Colchester Ground Search and Rescue, confirmed the proceeds from the 50/50 and barbecue go toward the search and rescue association, which has overseen the bike blessing barbecue for the past few years.

The bike blessing is also held in conjunction with a provincial initiative. May has been proclaimed Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to remind drivers motorcycle traffic will increase on Nova Scotia roads during the warmer months and to drive safely.
