Collection of all things ‘nerd’ coming to Truro

Published on April 10, 2014

TRURO- People in downtown Truro on Saturday shouldn’t be alarmed to see Klingons wandering along Esplanade Street or an assortment of super heroes.

The characters will no doubt be headed to the inaugural daylong NerdCon event featuring a costume contest.

The convention will be made up of several activities related to science fiction, fantasy, gaming and anything deemed “nerd worthy,” said convention organizer Bronwen Jones. She wanted to start this event to add some new excitement downtown after seeing some businesses close.

“I wanted to do something positive,” Jones said. “Give people something to do.”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 128 Esplanade St. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door, if any are left.

NerdCon will consist of a Magic: The Gathering tournament, along with other board games and the costume contest judged by Usagi Cosplayers from Halifax. Various vendors will also have booths set up selling their products and artisan crafts.

“It’s like a mini HalCon,” Jones said, comparing the event to Halifax’s similar convention.

Jones said the name NerdCon was suggested on the event’s Facebook page. Lots of people “liked” it, so it stuck.

“It had a lot of positive feedback.”

Other guests will be author Larry Gent and Geeks versus Nerds, where debaters discuss various pop culture topics, like the infamous Star Trek versus Star Wars debate.

Jones said she expects the crowd to be between 150 to 200 people. A hundred tickets have been sold so far, but between the vendors and people buying tickets at the door, there’ll be quite a bit of people there.
