TRURO – A Cobequid Educational Centre student has received an $80,000 scholarship.

Grade 12 student Sarah Millman is one of 30 young adults receiving the Loran Scholarship. The scholarship will cover four years of any university in Canada and includes mentorship and a summer program.

Millman was still a little shocked, as well as thrilled, when she spoke with the Truro Daily News on Wednesday shortly after receiving the good news.

“It means so much to me to not have to worry about whether or not I can afford (university),” said Millman, who has been accepted to both the University of Ottawa and University of Toronto. She intends to study either ethics or human rights and conflict.

“I was really sick during the interview and I wasn’t confident in what I said but I did my best. It’s such a weight off my shoulders.”

More than 70 national finalists participated in two days of selection interviews in Toronto last week. The finalists who were not selected receive a $3,000 award, included Truro’s Sarah Colborne.

The students were selected on character, service and leadership potential through the most rigorous and personalized scholarship selection process in Canada. The process includes regional and national interviews with up to 12 assessors over three months.

“These students have shown integrity, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit through the breadth and depth of their extracurricular activities,” said Franca Gucciardi, executive director of the foundation, in a news release.
