Trees and wreaths are displayed at Darrell Sandeson’s lot at the Canadian Tire gas bar parking lot in Bible Hill. Sandeson has a tree farm in Greenfield. His trees come from his farm as well as other tree farms in the area.
TRURO - The smell of freshly cut Christmas trees is spreading holiday cheer throughout Truro and area.
"It's a great time of year. I just love it," said Chris Donnachie, an employee at Darrell Sandeson's tree lot at the Canadian Tire Gas Bar on the corner of College Road and Main Street in Bible Hill. "Darrell has been here for many years, everyone knows the quality of (the trees) and that they are freshly cut. It's so nice to see the kids come and pick out their trees."
Local Christmas tree lots are expected to be a hive of activity during the next three weeks, as people look for that one special tree that can light up a room.
Sandeson cuts many of his trees from his farm in Greenfield and brings others in from other local farms, including his neighbour's U-Cut farm owned by his friend Bob Gibbs.
This is the second year Gibbs is operating his tree farm as a U-Cut. Sandeson and Gibbs have are both members of the Cobequid Christmas Tree Growers Association and have become very busy with the business that originally began as retirement hobbies.
"It is a nice family tradition to go out and pick out your own tree," said Gibbs, who provides his customers with a saw and helps retrieve trees with his ATV.
Wayne Chisholm of Cody's Christmas Trees has been selling trees with his son since 1998. He is set up at the Atlantic Superstore parking lot and said he was busy last weekend with sales.
"I get a lot of return customers here every year," he said. "A lot of work goes into getting trees ready to market. It's a big job but I enjoy it."
A mature tree has to be at least eight to 10 years old before it is ready to be harvested.
While local tree lots are offering a variety of trees, including balsam fir and pines, they are also selling wreathes, boughs for stringing up along the deck, as well as uncultivated trees to have decorated on the lawn.
