TRURO, N.S. – It was an early start for grass fire season as firefighters fought to contain a field fire Friday afternoon in Truro.

The Cobequid Fire Brigade responded to a grass fire call at 3:03 p.m. in a field behind Canadian Tire, near the McClures Brook.

Firefighters travelled into the field equipped with wearable water packs and were able to bring the flames under control within half an hour.

“Grass fires don’t usually start themselves,” said Trevor Forbes, deputy chief of the Cobequid Fire Brigade on the cause of the fire.

“It’s dry and it’s also windy, so conditions were ideal for it to spread very quickly. Luckily, we were able to contain it with the help of the Truro Fire Services and hopefully we won’t be back again.”

Both departments were able to fully extinguish the fire around 3:50 p.m.
