A Musquodoboit Valley man accused of driving his car 192 kilometres an hour in a school zone Wednesday afternoon has been granted bail with the Crown’s consent.

Marshall Ellis, 20, of Elderbank was arraigned in Dartmouth provincial court Thursday on charges of dangerous driving and fleeing from police.

Judge Alanna Murphy ordered Ellis released from custody on a $2,000 recognizance secured by his father’s personal property.

According to terms worked out by Crown and defence counsel, Ellis must observe a 10 p.m.-6a.m. curfew and is prohibited from occupying the driver’s seat of any vehicle or possessing car keys.

When the judge asked Ellis if he was willing to comply with his bail conditions, he replied: “Kind of. I don’t want to go to jail.”

Duty defence lawyer Aaron Martens told the court Ellis will be applying for legal aid. He will return to court April 27 to enter pleas.

An RCMP officer clocked a white Chevrolet Camaro going more than 200 km/h on Highway 102 near Bedford on Wednesday at 2:43 p.m. The officer tried to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to comply.

A few minutes later, a Halifax Regional Police traffic officer observed the same vehicle travelling192 km/h in a school zone on Rocky Lake Drive in Bedford.

The driver passed several vehicles on a solid yellow line and refused to stop

for police. The vehicle was not pursued and was last seen heading towards Waverley.

Police set up a roadblock on Waverley Road near Fall River but the driver wouldn’t stop, continuing to travel at a high speed, swerving in and out of lanes and narrowly avoiding other vehicles.

At about 3 p.m., the Camaro was located in the parking lot of an Irving gas station at 200 Waverley Rd. in Dartmouth, where the driver was arrested.

Regional police said Ellis was also issued Motor Vehicle Act tickets for having an expired registration and operating a vehicle without insurance.
