TRURO, N.S. – A development many residents were opposed to has been approved by Truro town council.
During a Monday evening meeting a development agreement that would allow Brentwood Developments to build six 10-unit, one- to two-storey, residential buildings at 118 Lyman St. passed with a vote of 5-2. Cathy Hinton and Danny Joseph, councillors for Ward 3 (the ward where the buildings will be built) voted against the development.
“Constituents do not want this development and they’re very disheartened,” said Hinton. “We didn’t feel it fit with the neighbourhood.”
She said residents are concerned about increased noise and traffic in the area, and changes in the character of the neighbourhood. Many have called her to express displeasure with the development.
The town set up an online survey for people in the area, and 81.4 per cent of those who responded were against the development, with 10 per cent in favour and 8.6 per cent having no opinion.
“I’ve been working with the East End Community Association and listening to my constituents, and spent many sleepless nights worrying about this,” said Hinton. “Now we’ll just have to hope for the best.”
An earlier proposal by Brentwood Developments, to construct two 42-unit, four-storey apartment buildings on the property, was not approved.
