BIBLE HILL, N.S.

The chips were flying as university woodsmen went head to head during an annual competition Saturday.

The sounds of thumping axes and revving chainsaws flooded the McMillan Show Centre as teams competed at the 33rd Annual Rick Russell Woodsmen Competition hosted by the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus.

Schools from Central and Eastern Canada as well as Northwestern United States gathered at the NSPEC Complex to compete in various events including handsaw races, chainsaw races, log decking, axe throwing and pole climbing.

Male and female teams included woodsmen clubs from Dal AC, Maritime College of Forest Technology, McGill University, Flemming College, University of New Brunswick, Colby College and Algonquin College.

The competition is held every year in memory of Rick Russell, a Nova Scotia Agriculture College graduate and worker for 24 years who created the competition and coached the NSAC Woodsmen team during his time there.

After passing away in 2004, a bursary fund was created in his name, and to this day the Rick Russell Memorial Bursary Fund helps students financially who are interested in the woodsmen program at Dal AC.
