Daisy Roberts is going to bike through several communities this summer, and she’s hoping people will come out and join her.
Roberts is a core member of the HeartLand Tour, which visits Truro July 11, this year.
“The number one priority is getting people active,” she said. “We want them moving off the couch, so they aren’t dying of heart disease.”
It’s a free event, she added, that’s fun and offers prizes.
Roberts, one of the owners of Hub Cycle, does a lot of biking herself, and teaches people to cycle safely. She’s been involved in the HeartLand Tour every year, but this is the first time she’s taken part as a core member. The tour will visit Halifax, Antigonish, Sydney, New Glasgow, Truro, Annapolis Royal, Bridgewater, and Yarmouth.
“We’re trying to make sure people know it’s open to everyone,” said Roberts. “It’s not all about cycling; people can choose to take part in a walk through Victoria Park if they like. This is about getting outside and doing what you’re comfortable with.”
Those who want to cycle can take part in either a long road ride, which is 43.9 kilomtres; short road ride, which is 20.2 kilometres; or a 15 kilometre trail ride. Routes start and finish at the Victoria Park bandshell.
Medical students are taking part in the tour, and will check heart rates.
There will also be children’s activities, draws for prizes, t-shirts and a light lunch. Costs are covered by sponsors.
More information, including maps of the road rides, can be found on the HeartLand Tour website at http://www.heartlandtour.ca
