TRURO, N.S. – Get ready to dig out the onesies as Truro’s Long John festival is right around the corner.

This year’s festival kicks off next week, and has a jam-packed schedule of both outdoor and indoor winter activities, as well as free festivities for everyone to enjoy in their long johns.

The events start on Thursday, Feb. 15, with free skating from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Colchester Legion Stadium, followed by United Way’s Soup Fest fundraiser at 11:30 a.m. in the Truro Farmers Market.

The official opening ceremony is set for Thursday evening at Civic Square, with free entertainment, horse and wagon rides and recreational events running from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Friday will see residents wear their best-looking long johns to work as the annual Mayor’s Challenge runs throughout the day.

Multiple free recreational activities will be going on throughout the day as well, including rounds of Pickle Ball, family skate sessions and a speed skating demonstration.

Highlights over the weekend will include a free archery demonstration at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre, Family Fun Day at Forever Memories Equestrian Centre, a free Fat Bike ride at Truro Junior High, and sledge hockey at Colchester Legion Stadium.

The festival will wrap up on Monday with a pancake breakfast at the Truro Legion from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by sledge hockey at the stadium and a sledding party at the legion hill before closing out with the closing ceremony at the Civic Square from 2:30-= to 5 p.m.

New this year is the ‘Go for the Golden Long Johns’ competition, which will allow people to gain points throughout the festival by completing challenges and posting photos using the hashtag #LongJohnTruro.

Points and a digital leaderboard will be on display at the corner of Prince and Young streets, and the individual or team with the most points will be awarded the Golden Long John medal.
