Nekki Forbes is excited about being involved in the upcoming production of Mary Poppins Jr. She’s directing the Marigold Youth Spotlight Theatre show, which will be staged July 19-21.
“We have three weeks to get it all together, so it’s a challenge,” said Forbes, who is a summer student. “I really like the energy. They’re so excited to learn, and so excited to put on a show. With this group, the instincts they have are great, and they’re so focused. We’ve just been blown out of the water.”
The play has a case of 32, aged 10-15, with four directors.
“It’s a one-hour show, and includes some new songs,” said Forbes. “We wanted something new, and this is the first time this show has been able to be leased. It’s a classic, and there’s a buzz around it with the new movie out soon.”
A production workshop has been added to this year’s program, allowing youth to learn more about what happens behind the scenes by working on props and backgrounds.
This is the fourth summer Forbes, who grew up in Truro and has been taking cinema studies at the University of Toronto, has spent her summers working at the theatre, but it’s her first time directing. Last year she stage managed the youth production.
“I did a drama camp one summer and caught the bug,” she said. “It stuck.
“Doing this can be a lot to handle at one time, but it’s worth it in the end.”
