Bible Hill, NS- Linda Finnie’s ‘free time’ is free no longer; it’s filled with all things Scottish as the first Colchester Highland Games and Gathering nears.

Awareness and fundraising events, including a bachelor auction, are taking place as excitement builds for the big day, Sept. 9.

“Things are going well and we’re excited,” said Finnie, an organizer for the event. “We’re still looking for a descendant of Bessie Murray, who designed the Nova Scotia tartan. We’d like to have them attend when we bring out the official Colchester tartan.”

Only four people, including Finnie, have seen the tartan, although a hint has been provided on the society’s website. It is a hunting tartan, which consists of muted colours, and is predominantly deep red, to represent the soil of the area. It includes green to represent the land, yellow to represent Acadian, black for Mi’kmaq and blue for water and everything Scottish.

“We went through quite a few to choose this and it’s a registered tartan that is only available with permission of the Colchester Highland Games Society,” said Finnie.

Kilts # 1, 2 and 3 can be purchased through the society. The first one, which costs $2,500, will be handmade for the purchaser and presented on the day of the games. It will come with a certificate stating it is the first made from the Colchester tartan. Numbers 2 and 3 are available for $1,500.

To help with the costs of the games and raise awareness several events are being held before September. A women’s pamper night is planned for Friday, May 12. The cost of the event is $20 for those who want to sign up for pamper sessions, while those who just want to look and purchase products from vendors can enter by making a donation to the games. Tickets are available online.

The society will have swordplay demos during the Canada 150 Multicultural Show, in the civic square, on June 3.

“On 24 June we’re holding our big event, a bachelor auction at the Holiday Inn,” said Finnie. “People have the chance to bid on a bachelor, who comes with a prize like tickets for an event or dinner. We’ve found some men already, and they’re quite handsome. We’re looking for more bachelors, of any age.”
