TRURO, N.S. – A place of calm and relaxation is being built behind the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre (CNWRC) this summer.

The Women's Memorial Gazebo is being added to the grounds, in memory of Const. Catherine Campbell. It is dedicated to all of the women in the community who have lost their lives to violence.

“Catherine believed that one act of kindness goes a long way,” said Heidi Patterson, a volunteer at the centre and gazebo project lead. “In true Catherine Campbell style, our aim is to give back to the women of our community. Our vision for the Women’s Memorial Gazebo is to provide a safe, calm and relaxing outdoor space for women in the community to perhaps read a book, practice mindfulness, take a few minutes to enjoy the outdoors, work on a craft or art project, or just simply breathe. All women deserve a safe space.”

Shoppers Drug Mart has donated $10,000, which covers the entire cost of the gazebo, to the project.

“We really appreciate all the help they’ve given us,” said Michaela MacLachlan, CNWRC office manager. “They have a real passion for helping the resource centre.”

The gazebo will be 12’ x 13’ and is being constructed on site by Mike Yorke of Maple Cabin Carpentry. It is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

Any other donations are welcome to help with the cost of running power to the gazebo, and for buying patio furniture and shrubbery.

A grand opening for the gazebo, along with a grand reopening for the women’s centre, will be held later in the year.
