TRURO, N.S. – Meryl Cook hopes her story will encourage others to use art to heal.

Rug hooking helped her heal emotionally following treatment for breast cancer, and she has now written two books about healing through creativity. The Dartmouth artist will be at NovelTea this Friday, 6-7:30 p.m., for a talk and book signing.

Cook’s first book ‘One Loop at a Time, a story of rug hooking, healing and creativity’ was published in December 2016 and related how she used journaling and design to create healing mats and reinvent herself.

In November, ‘One Loop at a Time: The Creativity Workbook’ was published. It provides information on Cook’s healing process, along with information on how the reader can build their own toolkit for moving their life forward.

“I wasn’t intending to write two books in one year, but people said the first book inspired them and they wanted more information on how they could do it for themselves,” said Cook. “I wrote the second one in response to this.

“It’s not just for rug hookers; it’s for anyone wanting to tap into their creativity and/or find a new way of journaling. I use it to decide how to move my life forward.”

She finds the second book is attracting a wider audience, including many young people.

“It shows what I started with and what the design became, and there’s space in the book for people to write and sketch,” she said. “It allows them to find their own creative process.”

Both books will be available Friday at NovelTe, at the corner of Prince and Pleasnt streets, and Cook will also have some of her hooked mats with her.
