TRURO - More than a dozen local artists are coming together this weekend for a show and sale.
The Vent Art Expo gets underway at the Truro Fire Hall at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Organized by Jeff Roberts and Allie Lockhart, the event will see 13 artists with works on display, as well as live pottery and painting, and entertainment.
"We're trying to encourage the public to buy local art," said Roberts. "If I were to say to someone if they wanted to purchase art for their home, where would they go, a lot would say something like Wal-mart where they would buy something mass produced and nothing would go to the actual artist."
Roberts said the event is to bring together a number of artists, and different styles of art, to showcase what the area has.
"We had a fair amount of applications, but we have limited space so we had to narrow it down," he added. "We wanted to have a wide example of artwork. With the 13 artists we will showcase, there will be just about anything there is to offer."
Both Roberts and Lockhart have participated in local Art Battle competitions, and started talking about creating this event after the art gallery at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre opened.
"We got to talking about commissions ... galleries take a lot of commission, and we wanted to host a different event. When you go to a gallery, it's almost high-class and there are often strict rules.
"We wanted to created a different experience. We wanted live music, and more than one artist because a lot of exhibits are solo. We opened this event to as many local artists as possible."
Both Lockhart and Roberts will have their own artwork on display, as well as Karen Keyes, Brittney Hayward, Crystal Fullteron, Hannah Knockwood, Jen Power, Karine Lahaie, Melanie Morrissey, Nicole Allen-Carnohan, Rob Macintosh, Michelle Thibault and Danielle Sawada.
Thibault and Sawada will host live performances with paint and pottery, respectively. Ben Edwards and Felicia Maceachern will provide music for the event.
"We're excited," said Roberts. "It's been a long time coming, but it's been fun."
Tickets for the event are $10 (cash only) and available at Thrown Together Pottery on King Street in Truro, and the Needs convenience store in Tatamagouche. They can also be purchased at the door, as well as the Truro Farmers' Market during market hours on Saturday.
