TRURO - More than 200 women will gather tonight to celebrate women and wellness.
The Marigold Cultural Centre will be the scene for the ladies to meet from 6 to 9 p.m.
The event started as a party in a private home and has grown to become a regional event called Wine, Women & Wellness.
New Brunswick based Helen MacDonnell hosted the parties in her home for her women friends to relieve the winter blues. However, in 2003 her family was dealing with the death of her brother from suicide. MacDonnell spent the next year learning about her brother's mental illness.
The next time MacDonnell hosted her
party the theme had changed: more tears
than laughter as she shared the story of her brother and her own struggle to understand mental illness.
Since then, the party has become known as Wine, Women & Wellness and each year has grown. It brings women together to become closer, share and listen to guest speakers. The event has become an important fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association.
The Colchester East Hants branch of the mental health association will host the first Truro Wine, Women & Wellness.
