DEBERT – A former Cold War bunker in Debert is now a data storage centre.
Bastionhost founder and chief executive Anton Self said some key infrastructure was installed in September.
“As of a couple of weeks ago we got our first server up and running, we have our first client and now we have our data centre up and running,” he told the Truro Daily News. “We’re open for business.”
Bastionhost purchased the Diefenbunker from the Colchester Regional Development Agency in December with the deal officially closing in March.
The information technology firm will use the facility to store data on multiple computer servers for its clients. The company’s first client is a small software company from Montreal. Its identity could not be disclosed.
While pleased the idea he has had since 1999 has come to fruition, Self admits there is a lot of work that remains.
“The proof of our success will be in our balance sheet,” he said.
“We’re still burning money month over month, so we’re losing money. I think that it will be real nice when I can tell you we’re
profitable.”
The company has several people working at the bunker and Self said as it secures more work it will hire more staff.
The bunker, located at the former Canadian Forces Station Debert, was completed in 1964 to provide protection for civilian and military officials in the event of nuclear war.
