Smoking banned from town-owned playgrounds
TRURO – Smoking is no longer permitted on town-owned playgrounds in Truro.
An amendment to the town’s no smoking bylaw passed second and final reading yesterday. The bylaw was initially passed in January to make it illegal to smoke on Inglis Place. The town introduced amendments to curb smoking on playgrounds owned by the town. A playground is defined in the bylaw as an area used by children for outdoor play or recreation, containing items such as swings, slides and seesaws.
The amendments also make it illegal to smoke in the ally connected to Inglis Place.
Violating the bylaw could result in a fine between $100 and $1,000.

i think if caught they should be made to pick up the cigarette butts!

Based on this definition and the specific inclusions mentioned I would say this would not include the locations you are asking about Scott.

'Bout Time from Truro, NS writes: Now, if only all other jurisdictions would follow this example. And expand the by-law to ALL public places, including soccer fields, ball fields, etc.
Nathan - the rights of smokers? What right, to poison yourself and those around you? If you wish to do it to yourself, knock yourself out. Every individual should have the right to 'clean' air, albeit thas is a rare commodity.

Whenever i'm home the only time i see people on it is at tim hortons's or the banks or margolians. the other shops are always empty, but i'm sure they'll tell you is because people smoke outside. lol I can see it being the usual 20 ft from a public entrance law (which would mean practically all the main part of inglis, but why a fuss about going around the corner... the smokers obviously do that out of respect to the non smokers. Anyway .. Totally agree with the playground ban. It makes me sick to moms smoke with babies in their arms.

Tax Rebate Please from NS writes: As a tax payer who's taxes going to providing such services, can I expect a rebate as they are made inaccessible? If I cannot smoke on the street which my taxes paid for the refurb, why should I not get a rebate? As I will not use that down town core street.
I would hazard a guess it is almost criminal they way they demand your money and then refuse to allow you to use the amenities as they smoke, which is lets face it another heavily taxed cash grab.

These RATZ (radical anti tobacco zealots) don't want smokers to be seen. This has nothing to do with anyone's health, never has. SHS is harmless. The WHO proved this and even found SHS to have a beneficial effect at protecting kids from cancer. Follow the mega (taxpayer) money spent on smoker bans right up to Big Pharma's door (RWJF & Pfizer) in proven useless cessation product profits....

Sam Daniels from Truro, NS writes: Second hand smoke kills. It's been proven. Whether it's in a house, in a car, or from contact outdoors it kills. Period. Children shoudl NOT be around second hand smoke. Children play in playgrounds. If there was no smoking in or around playrgounds there would be no second hand smoke. Bylaw sounds prettly logical to me.

Roger from NS writes: To all the smokers who think that non-smokers should breathe in their foul smelling and chemical laced smoke: Smell my flatulence!! Seriously, if I have to breathe in your disgusting air, breathe in mine. At least mine isn't cancer causing and mostly chemical free. Also, mine is a result of a normal bodily function. I don't choose to pass gas, but you choose to smoke.
I grew up in a home with 2 smokers who didn't care if had to breathe in their stench, at home or during car trips. I applaud the town for their decision (and I don't often do that).

Influenced from NS writes: Young kids should not see adults smoking period. The less they see, the less apt they are to be influenced by what they see. If ANY smoker can say that smoking does not negatively effect your health in some way, than go make your millions as a defence lawyer. If not, let our youth grow up healthy and make their own informed decisions as an adult. Hopefully that decision won't be hanging out in front of Tim Horton's on Inglis Street (or anywhere) smoking poison is cool.
