Tim Sexsmith has a knack for fixing bikes, and this year his skills are making a lot of young people happy.

Every Tuesday morning for the last couple of months, Sexsmith, who lives in North River, has been fixing bicycles donated to the United Way of Colchester County’s Bikes for Kids program.

“It’s my first year here,” he said. “I’ll come back any time.”

A neighbour, who has since passed away, taught him to repair bicycles several years ago. He fixes them at home and at the Colchester Community Workshops, where he has been working for more than 15 years.

“He’s been a huge help to our program,” said Heather Hamilton, administrative and communications assistant with the United Way of Colchester County. “We’ve had about 40 bikes go out so far, and he’s worked on most of them.”

There was one bicycle other people were ready to give up on because they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the brakes. Sexsmith looked at it and realized there was a small bolt missing. He added the bolt and the bicycle was ready to go to a child.

“I’m happy to be here; it’s something different,” he said. “It’s good to help.”

Sexsmith also brightens up any workplace with his friendly manner and enthusiasm.

The Bikes for Kids program has been running in the area for 19 years and has provided bicycles for about 1,000 children. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the program sponsor.

Financial donations to the Bikes for Kids program are always appreciated. They’re used to purchase parts and helmets, and are eligible for a tax receipt. Donations can be made by contacting the United Way office or by visiting www.colchester.unitedway.ca/gift-catalog
