TRURO, N.S. – The United Way of Colchester County launched its 2017-2018 campaign on Wednesday, in front of a large crowd of supporters.

This year’s goal remains the same as last, at $275,000. The campaign is off to a great start, with more than $10,000 coming in during the kickoff. Donations and sales of 50-50 tickets raised $5,057.25 and Scotiabank matched $5,000.

Mary Teed, executive director of the Colchester Adult Learning Association, was the guest speaker for the event, and she talked about how the United Way has helped.

“One thing we benefited from was the back-to-school campaign,” said Teed. “Last year we were able to get backpacks from the United Way. For some students it was the first and only time they ever received new materials for back to school, so they were very appreciative of that.”

She noted that the United Way Day of Caring brought CALA and local businesses together to make the Little Free Library in Great Village possible.

One of the focuses of the United Way is moving people out of poverty, and to help more people understand poverty a ‘Living on the Edge’ simulation will take place in Truro on Oct 17, which is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

“Truro has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the nation,” said Keltie Jones, chair of the board for the United Way of Colchester. “As many of you know, I spent a lot of time knocking on doors in the recent past. I saw that poverty. I saw what’s happening behind closed doors in this community. We can’t live under the illusion that we’re all doing fine because we’re not.”
