It’s a time people of all ages have been waiting for. Perhaps even counting the days until the blessed event.

It’s summertime! And Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester has been busy planning many fun, exciting activities, and events for not only our Littles but all the children in the community.

When we consider summer, we often think of a fun, relaxing time off that kids look forward to all year. And although that may be the case for many, unfortunately, it's not the case for all kids.

For some children, summer can be a real challenge. Summer camps, sports leagues, and travel are all costly and sadly something not all kids have the opportunity to participate in. Keeping this in mind, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester wanted to make sure the summer of 2018 could be something memorable for everyone.

On June 29, right after report card day, kids can head to the Rath Eastlink Community Centre from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with their parents for our Kids Day Out event.  Every child who brings their report card will receive a free piece of pizza. The RECC will provide free access to the pool and climbing wall and the arena will be full of bouncy castles, life-size plinko and more.

Another opportunity is a free swimming at Victoria Park every Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. throughout July and August.

In addition, throughout the year the agency plans several free activities for matches to participate in. Some of these include sledding at the legion, art night at the library, and most recently "Try Tennis" at the Truro Tennis Club and “Try Golf” at the Truro Golf Club. At both these events, Littles tried a new sport, one they likely haven't had the opportunity to participate in before. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester provided special memberships for those youth who show a passion for either of these sports.

“It was great to partner with both these organizations. It was a unique and special experience for our Littles to not only try both these new sports, but have private instruction from professionals,” said Stephanie Mitchell, one of the agency’s caseworkers. “We always want to make sure that the Littles in our program are provided with the opportunity to try new things. Planning these ongoing free activities allows us to do just that, all while providing our Bigs with added support.”

As the agency continues to celebrate its 40th anniversary, it  wants to create more unique and fun activities for their matches to do together. The team at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester has planned a summer-long scavenger hunt that will take matches to different destinations in Colchester. Once matches figure out the clue, they will need to snap a picture and submit it to staff. We will be sharing the photo submissions on our social media pages, so make sure you follow along! @bbbscolchester.
