Bass River Notebook: Revitalization of community hall a goal in Bass River

Summer is on its way, it's almost here, though I am skeptical when I'm starting the furnace fire in the morning and scraping frost from my windshield.

There are many indications of the changing season in our area. Local restaurants along the shore are up and running, museums, parks and information centers are also open and ready for business in most cases. I encourage everyone to take advantage of all that is available to us in our own backyard this summer because you just might discover something new or revisit an old favourite.

Bass River is buzzing with the prospect of revitalizing the Bass River Community Hall. There has been one meeting recently and another is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 at the hall to further discuss the future of the building. All are welcome to attend and lend their support and ideas toward this venture. There is also an afternoon of entertainment planned at the Bass River fire hall on Sunday, June 14, with proceeds going to the community hall. If you are interested in performing at this event please contact Bill by calling 902-647-2255.

It has been quiet at the hall for some time but with a few improvements and some help and support from the community the facility may thrive once more.

The Bass River Heritage Society is eagerly planning for Heritage Day in August. Bass River is celebrating its 250th anniversary with activities throughout the year. Watch for posters and notices for future events.

In addition, the museum is now open for the summer as is the "Little Free Library" located at the museum. Also, tickets for the music extravaganza on June 7, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Economy Recreation Centre, are available. The day will include a barbecue and the musical talents of Matt Minglewood, Thom Swift, The Hupman Brothers, Charlie A'Court, Dave Gunning and more. For tickets call Debbie at 902-647-2753, Micheline at 902-647-2985 or Natalie at 902-647-2255.

The school year is quickly coming to a close. The end-of-year-dance at West Colchester Consolidated School will be held on June 11 and field day takes place on June 24. There will be a recognition night on June 25 with awards and graduation certificates awarded and everyone is welcome to attend.

Denise Gilley is a former member of the Canadian Navy and a married mother of two children. She lives in Bass River. Community news items can be sent to her at john.gilley@ns.sympatico.ca.
