TRURO, N.S. – If you legalize it, they will come.
That’s the premise Truro businessman Phillip McLellan is banking on as he branches out with his existing business operation, adding hydroponic growing supplies.
“Well, I opened because of the new thing the government is going to do this year,” he said. “I’ve set up to get prepared for this.”
The federal government is slated to legalize cannabis later this year.
East Coast Hydroponics is located at 589 Prince St., the former Scotia Bank building. McLellan also owns East Coast Pawn Stars at the same location.
The hydronic store is located at the rear of the pawn shop and is accessible through the same front entrance.
East Coast Pawn Stars, which originally opened on East Prince Street, has been operating in Truro for almost six years.
The store moved to its new location last July and MacLellan said with extra space available, he decided to lease an additional 1,100 sq. ft. to set up the hydroponic supply store.
“All the equipment, all the nutrients are here for vegetables; you can grow tomatoes, you can grow anything, really,” he said. “But, why am I in it? Because of what’s coming up this summer and where it’s leading to. I might as well be honest.”
MacLellan said the shop is gearing up with enough stock for one-stop, grow-op shopping. Their products include liquid nutrients, starter kits, cloning equipment, buckets, pots, reservoirs, light bulbs and light sticks, along with wall-mount oscillating fans, hoses, sprayers and water pumps,
“We have some inline fans, insulated hose for inline fans with filter systems,” he said, for those who wish to grow odour free.
“We have everything you need to set you up,” MacLellan said. “And if we don’t have it, we can have it here in three or four days.”
