Things are going so well at the salt mine in Pugwash that ownership doesn’t want to talk about it.
Since the potash mine in Sussex, N.B., closed, which also ended the production of salt as a by-product, road salt for New Brunswick has been shipped from Pugwash.
In March of this year, the K+S Windsor Salt mineramped up production to meet the increased demand, with three shifts of workers, including 10 new employees, increasing production
by 14 per cent.
German-based K+S Group is the parent company, which owns Morton Salt Inc. of Chicago. Morton Salt owns Windsor Salt Co., which is K+S’s Canadian mining subsidiary.
A Morton representative in Chicago originally agreed to an interview to discuss the prosperity but, after three days of delays, refused to make anyone available, not even to say what it was they didn’t want to talk about.
The facility in Pugwash mines and produces bulk and packaged de-icing salts that are used in Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
The company employs 800 people across Canada, including about 150 at Pugwash.
This week, Halifax regional council approved a five-year agreement to buy rock salt from Windsor Salt.
