Awesome Sauce is a new foodservice company in Truro, providing planned meals and grocery pick-up services for those living a fast-paced life.
Each week, they send free meal plans to their subscribers via newsletter, and will also pick up the ingredients needed for the week’s meals for those who don’t have time to hit the grocery store.
“It is nice to not have to think about what you are having for dinner that night, to avoid the meal stress,” said Carla Connolly, co-founder of Awesome Sauce.
“If you have small children that you don’t want to drag around the grocery store, or you have a huge to-do list for the day, the hour it takes shopping for groceries can be better spent elsewhere while we get your groceries.”
The grocery pick-up service allows those in a rush to skip the stores, only requiring them to meet an Awesome Sauce representative outside the store to receive their groceries.
The service comes at a cost, and different price plans are laid out on their site.
Each recipe they use is tested by the owners, and is looked at for affordability, health value and taste.
If they think a meal works, they will add it to the meal plan, and will also add their own information and advice to each recipe.
“We try to select meals for local seasonality,” said co-founder Jesse Slaunwhite.
“This month we added corn chowder, since corn is in season and really cheap right now. We also add information and personal insights on subbing ingredients, such as good replacements for bacon and other meats, to each recipe.”
Each week comes with five new meals, and varies from simple soups to elaborate full-course meals.
The idea for Awesome Sauce came from the desire to have a meal-planning service like Sauté or Blue Ribbon in smaller towns like Truro.
“Personally, I wanted this service when I had my kids as babies; it would have made things much easier,” said Connolly.
“In Toronto, Halifax and other bigger cities, you have more options for eating, but in an area like this, you lack those options. Not everyone lives in town, and not everyone can just pop over to the grocery store on their lunch break.”
While some of those companies do service Truro via mail order, what makes Awesome Sauce stand out is their push to make the food yourself.
“My personal growth in the kitchen over the years has ballooned,” said Connolly.
“Our service will help people increase their skill in the kitchen, while also exposing them to new, good food. It’s always cheaper to eat at home. If you can prepare these meals at home, and have the stuff for them, why wouldn’t you?”
