TRURO – Champions Bar and Grill has a new owner.

Greenfield’s Derek Forsyth, 41, has bought the Robie Street business from

Truro’s Paul Blenkhorn, who will remain as a minority owner. Blenkhorn is also the owner of The Cat Shack in Truro.

Forsyth said there are no immediate plans to make any significant changes to the business, which has a staff of about 20 people and used to be The Mill Beverage Room for more than 30 years previously.

“Nothing is changing anytime soon. It will take about three months to do an analysis and to access” the business, Forsyth told the Truro Daily News, adding he is pleased with the condition of the building.

Forsyth is also the owner of Keggers Alehouse and Loft in Truro, the Split Crow in Truro and Springhill and Ryan Duffys, also in Truro. He said the purchase of Champions is an ideal addition to his business portfolio.

“It’s the perfect fit for our business plan in terms of being non-competitive to the others I own,” Forsyth said, adding, “it’s a great long-term investment and increases buying group power. The margins of profit are slim so to have ownership of more (businesses), the better.”

When asked if Forsyth if he’s working towards becoming the owner of all local bars, he said that’s not the plan.

“I’ve heard that rumour. We haven’t even thought about it,” he said.
