Spicy Cravings to expand menu in new year

TRURO - Spicy Cravings, an authentic Indian food business, will use a government grant to expand its menu in the new year.

The business received a voucher for professional support and advice from Nova Scotia universities and colleges as part of the province's Productivity and Innovation Voucher Program.

Owners Kala Muthuswamy and Aru Thiagarajan will spend the next few months researching and adding new items to their existing menu.

"We are quite excited about this year," said Thiagarajan. "This is an opportunity to add more products, and add more nutritional value to the existing products, and make more healthy choices for people. We are also exploring other gluten-free options."

Spicy Cravings has been serving popular ethnic cuisine at the Truro Farmers' Market since 2009, selling a variety of homemade products such as vegetable and chicken samosas, vegetable curries, mango chutney, pakoras – which are vegetable fritters, along with gluten-free products.

The Spicy Cravings booth is closed for the season at the market and will re-open in April.

"The unique thing about our business is it was born in the Truro Farmers' Market and it is growing. It's really welcoming and we learn from the customers. We like to share our culture and our food, it's really fun," said Muthuswamy.
