TRURO - A number of local people got caught up on their Christmas shopping in Truro on the weekend.
And when it comes to where to shop, opinions throughout the town are mixed.
"I shop local because stores here have all I want," said Valley's Mary Robertson, adding there's not enough time to travel outside of town for shopping and there's child care to be considered when heading out of town for the day.
"And prices are just as good here as they are in Halifax and New Glasgow," Robertson said, adding she's about half done her seasonal shopping.
Truro's Al Cary agrees there are advantages to shopping locally.
"I'll probably do what I have to do locally because it's convenient here and because of the cost of gas," Cary said.
Truro Heights' Elizabeth Aikens said there's a benefit to shopping in a home community as well as travelling outside of Truro. She believes there's more variety in other centres but the feel of what's "familiar" in a home community is welcoming. Her daughter, Sarah, on the other hand, prefers shopping outside of Truro where bigger centres have "one-stop" shopping.
And then there are people who leave their own town to spend money here. On Saturday, Pictou County's Norma MacDonald was passing through the area and decided to stop and shop in the downtown area.
"I used to live here so I know the area and like the (merchandise)," said MacDonald.

Well I haven't seen anyone get searched at the Walmart lately... That's an improvement.
