A couple quick points to start the third set swung momentum to the Citadel Phoenix and the Cobequid Cougars could not get it back Saturday in the provincial girls' volleyball final.

Citadel won 25-18, 13-25 and 15-6, becoming the first Capital region team in 18 years to win the provincial girls' volleyball banner.

Citadel took 3-0 and 7-2 leads in the deciding set, resulting in timeouts by Cobequid. The Cougars battled back to 8-5, but that was as close as they would get.

“We made two or three mistakes right at the start of the third set,” coach Bob Piers said after the match.

“When you get into a third set and somebody gets a lead on you like that it’s really hard to climb back into it.”

The Cougars dropped the first set, which was tight early on with no team leading by more than three points until Citadel went ahead 14-10. Cobequid responded, but could not pull even.

A different CEC team came out at the start of the second set and jumped out to a 5-1 lead only to see Citadel tie it at 6-6 moments later. With Citadel charging again, Piers took a timeout with his team up 14-12. The Cougars looked re-energized afterwards, rolling off nine straight points with Sareen Singh serving to force a third set.

“We were a little nervous at the start and that really came back to hurt us because we played very well in the second set,” Piers said.

“The third set they just outplayed us.”

CEC advanced to the final with 25-14, 25-21 victory over Horton in the semifinal.
