TRURO - Jared Baird didn't waste any time qualifying for the NCAA Division 1 East Region championship in javelin.
The 20-year-old Clifton native punched his ticket for the event at the first competition of the Big South Conference season, the University of North Florida Spring Break Open in Jacksonville, Fl., over the weekend with a throw of 63.5m to win the event.
The regional qualifying mark is 61.60m.
The Winthrop University student's performance places him No. 1 in the NCAA rankings among javelin throwers and topped his own Winthrop University record of 62.26m set last season. The throw also nabbed him the record for the spring break event.
Baird will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, this weekend.
