TRURO - Truro Lions throwers have left yet another mark on the provincial track and field scene.
Three members of the team picked up provincial athlete of the year honours at the recent 2009 Athletics Nova Scotia annual awards banquet in Halifax.
Truro's Kayla Gallagher was named midget female athlete of the year, while Sarah Millman and Drew Erskine took home the award in the female and male bantam divisions.
All three athletes have helped the Lions to consistently finish atop the podium at both outdoor and indoor events through 2009.
Gallagher broke a 15-year-old discus record with her throw of 33.32m at a 2009 event.
She also claimed silver in both the shot put and discus at the Canadian Legion Championships in Sherbrooke, Que.
Millman laid claim to three provincial records in both indoor and outdoor competition, including the outdoor hammer (28.92m) and discus (26.39m) marks and is ranked No. 1 in her age group in discus, hammer and shot put.
Erskine nabbed both the provincial bantam discus (35.75m) and shot put (10.83m) records in his rookie season of competition. He also claimed the Atlantic titles in discus, shot put and hammer.

Coach Paul Millman does an excellent job teaching students how to properly throw and how to get the most out of their bodies. I am extremely proud of all the members of the Lion's Throw team. Some of them are currently ranked in the top 10 in thier division in Canada. One day we may have an olympian from this team!

Drew's record in the shot put was a 25 year old record.
