Cougars teams sweep volleyball tourney - again

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars girls volleyball teams swept both divisions of a tournament for the second consecutive week.
The Cougars #1 and #2 squads finished first in both divisions of the recent Sydney Academy Invitational Tournament just a week after doing so at the Sackville high invitational.
The tier 1 squad finished atop the 10-team division with a straight sets victory (25-16, 25-10) over Bridgewater in the final while the tier 2 team did so with a 25-23, 25-10 win over Riverview #2. The Cougars #1 team opened the tournament with straight sets wins over Sydney Academy, Port Hawkesbury and Inverness to finish first in their pool. Cobequid then defeated Avonview 29-27, 25-16 in the quarter-final before handing Riverview a 25-18, 25-15 setback in the semi.
The second team got out of the gate with straight sets victories over Riverview and Glace Bay. They then defeated Hants East 25-16, 25-4 in the semifinal.
Anastasia Callaghan was named the tournament's MVP and led the Cougars with 15 aces, 38 kills and 28 digs. Bethany Ferguson was named to the tournament all-star squad.
Shakara Paris collected 14 aces and added 23 blocks, 14 kills and nine digs and Kiersten Cormier made 28 blocks and added 23 kills.
Rachel Wright was named Tier 2 MVP with 14 kills and 15 blocks while teammates Nicole Munro was named to the all-star team with 13 kills, 29 digs and 13 passes. Sareen Singh collected 15 aces.
Both teams are competing this weekend at the MacDonald's Invitational hosted by the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals in Antigonish.
