MILLBROOK - Anyone who ever wanted to learn how to speak Mi'kmaq should mark Oct. 28 on their calendars.
That date is the start of a six-week introductory course for the Mi'kmaq language, being hosted by the Glooscap Heritage Centre.
The course runs on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will be taught by children's author and long-time educator Patsy Paul-Martin, co-ordinator of First Nation Cultural Services with the Chignecto Regional School Board.
The program is open to everyone and all are encouraged to come to begin learning how to read, write and speak Mi'kmaq.
"There are a lot of reasons to learn to speak this beautiful language," said Gordon Pictou the Program Director for the Glooscap Heritage Centre.
"For many like myself I missed the opportunity when I was a kid, and now that I have kids of my own I want to make sure they don't miss it too.
"We had some fantastic educators from all over Nova Scotia at our first annual Educator's Conference here Oct. 2nd and I heard many of them say that they have trouble pronouncing several Mi'kmaq place names and words they need to use when teaching, so I can really see how this class will be of benefit to a broad audience."
Patsy Paul-Martin is an author of a number of children's books and has spent the last many years working in various ways to help Mi'kmaq children regain their ancestral language. She goes to First Nation workplaces and works with early-childhood educators, public schools, First Nation schools and community centres to promote and teach the Mi'kmaq language to those who want to learn
The cost of the course is $160 per person and participants must pay an $80 non-refundable deposit upon registering.
